How it works
What makes this work, work, can be understood through four principles for transforming stuckness in life into paths towards real purpose:
- The body is the doorway to a larger self understanding. Our body is always trying to resolve our deepest longings and dilemmas, amidst an insanely complex landscape. When you have more skill to listen, you find yourself naturally living in the direction of meaning.
- There's a process to noticing being hard on yourself, and becoming less hard on yourself. It's still possible to be hard on yourself for not doing the process well, but with support it becomes easier. When transforming our lives for the better, it's unavoidable to use new skills and capacities at a faster pace than our system can handle. By learning our real rhythms, we become more aware of reality, and less prone to the pitfall of self-blame out of ignorance of our deeper needs.
- Processing thoughts and feelings in relationship is a fundamental human need. Without regular contact with other supportive beings, everything is harder, and when everything is hard it's easy to blame ourselves for not being good enough. The truth is that you just need help. That is what a human being is meant to be: a social, communal, being.
- Grief is the power to integrate changes. There is no way to be healthy and not feel recurrent sadness, smallness, and collapse. But like all pain, being present to it allows it to carry forward. This is how we transform suffering. We need enough resource to be present, this is where relationships, and skill in navigating body-mindfulness comes in. And the process to not being hard on yourself is there for when you can't access those. And eventual forgiveness is there for when you can't access not being hard on yourself.
With these four principles working together—and they really do reinforce one-another—navigating our world-weary pain becomes not only possible, but a regular source of feeling inspired and alive.
Because taking suffering seriously and compassionately in a suffering world is the truest path to integrity.
